Algorithm Appreciation: People Prefer Algorithmic to Human Judgment
⚖️ Decision MakingAbstract
Challenging the algorithm aversion narrative, this study shows that in many contexts people actually prefer algorithmic advice over human judgment. The preference reverses only when the task is perceived as subjective or uniquely human.
Key Findings
- People show "algorithm appreciation" for objective, quantifiable tasks
- Algorithm aversion emerges mainly for subjective and moral judgments
- Expertise of the human alternative moderates the preference
