Fear of Autonomous Robots and Artificial Intelligence: Evidence from National Representative Data with Probability Sampling

Liang, Y., & Lee, S. A.

AI Anxiety

Abstract

Using nationally representative survey data, this study maps the prevalence and predictors of fear toward autonomous robots and AI. The findings reveal that AI anxiety is widespread but unevenly distributed across demographic and psychological profiles.

Key Findings

  • Over 70% of respondents expressed some degree of discomfort with autonomous AI
  • Prior exposure to robots reduced fear, while science fiction exposure increased it
  • Personality traits (especially openness and neuroticism) predict AI anxiety levels
